Teething Solutions

Your baby’s first tooth is an important milestone in their life. But it is also the start of teething, a time which can be painful and exhausting for them, and for that matter, you as well. Yes, it may mean some sleepless nights and difficult days, but there are some things you can do to make the process easier on everyone.

If you baby is fussy, drooling more or is eating less, those are indicators that he or she may be teething. It is normal if they are eating less than usual since their gums are hurting. But if they stop eating, you should contact their doctor. They may sleep less, as a result of teething, and may also start chewing on things, including her hands, in an effort to relieve the pain.

Try chilling a teething ring or similar item in the refrigerator for them to chew. Chilled vegetables, and a clean, wet washcloth may also help. You may want to try applying very gentle pressure to their gums with a finger through a piece of clean gauze, or with a chilled spoon. Make sure that whatever you give them, it is clean and has no small parts that could break off and cause them to choke. If you are concerned about the pain, ask their doctor to recommend a pain reliever suitable for your child.

Even though it might seem at times like teething will go on forever, it will eventually pass. But be patient, since all of your baby’s teeth were already present in their jawbone the day they were born. As a reminder, your baby should have their first dental visit within six months of his or her first tooth, and before their first birthday.
